EEG Testing: What It’s Like and Why It Helps in Tampa, FL

November 14, 2025

Key Points

  • Takes 30–60 minutes, no pain, no needles—just a few sensors on your head.
  • Catches seizures, sleep problems, memory changes, and other brain concerns.
  • Done right in our Tampa office with results explained the same week.
  • Dr. Henkel reviews every test himself—no guesswork.
  • Most insurance covers it; we check for you ahead of time.

If you’ve been told you need an EEG, you probably have a few questions. Will it hurt? How long does it take? What does it even show? I’m Dr. Henkel, and I’ve been doing these tests for over 30 years here in Tampa. Let me put it simply: it’s one of the easiest things we do, and it gives us a ton of useful information. Think of it like checking the battery in your car—it tells us if things are running smoothly or if something needs attention. Here’s exactly what happens, step by step, so you know what to expect.

What an EEG Actually Does

Your brain is always sending tiny electrical signals. An EEG picks those up through small sensors on your scalp. We see the patterns on a screen—kind of like watching waves on the ocean. Normal brains have steady rhythms. When something’s off, we spot it right away.

That’s it. No radiation. No poking. Just data.

When We Use EEG Testing

I order an EEG when someone’s having:

  • Seizures or “funny spells”
  • Memory fog that’s getting worse
  • Sleep issues—like falling asleep at the wheel or acting out dreams
  • Dizziness or balance problems with no clear cause

Sometimes an MRI looks normal, but the EEG shows the real story. It’s about function, not just pictures.

Your EEG Visit: What Really Happens

You’ll come to our office on West Virginia Avenue. Here’s the play-by-play:

  1. Quick Chat – We go over your symptoms, meds, and sleep the night before. Takes 5 minutes.
  2. Sensors Go On – A tech measures your head, marks a few spots, and sticks on 20–25 little electrodes with paste. Feels like getting a cap fitted. No shaving.
  3. Relax and Record – You sit in a recliner. We’ll ask you to:
  4. Close your eyes and rest
  5. Open and close your eyes a few times
  6. Breathe fast for a minute
  7. Look at a flashing light
  8. These aren’t tricks—they just help us see how your brain reacts.
  9. Done – Electrodes come off with warm water. You’re out the door in under an hour.

You can drive yourself home. No recovery time.

How to Get Ready (It’s Simple)

  • Wash your hair the night before. Skip the product.
  • Get a good night’s sleep unless we tell you to stay up (for sleep-deprived tests).
  • Eat normally. Avoid caffeine after lunch if you can.
  • Take your meds as usual.
  • Wear a top that buttons in front—easier with wires.

That’s all. No fasting. No stress.

Different Kinds of EEGs We Do

Type How Long When We Use It
**Routine** 30–40 min First look at seizures or spells
**Sleep-Deprived** 45–60 min To catch hidden activity
**Ambulatory** 1–3 days at home Real-life monitoring

I choose based on what you’re dealing with. No one-size-fits-all.

Reading the Results

I look at every tracing myself. Normal? Great. Abnormal?

You’ll follow-up with from us in a few days with a clear explanation and a plan—whether that’s medication, lifestyle changes, or more testing.

A Real Tampa Patient Story

“I was having moments where I’d ‘zone out’ for 10 seconds. My doctor said stress. Dr. Henkel did a sleep-deprived EEG. Found I was having focal-onset seizures. One pill later, I’m back to coaching Little League.”

*Mike T., 44, Carrollwood*

That’s the kind of clarity an EEG brings.
